HOW TO: Intsall MagicJack Plus On A Mac Mini
HOW TO:
Install MagicJack Plus On A Mac Mini Server Running OS X 10.7 Lion Server
We installed the MagicJack Plus on two different machines. Installation on the MacBook Air was a breeze … plugged it in, downloaded the Mac Update, and it started right up without issue. However, when we tried installing the MagicJack Plus on our Mac Mini Server 2.0GHz Intel Core i7 Quad Core (late 2011) running OS X 10.7 Lion Server, we immediately hit a brick wall … and 3 hours spent online with their ridiculous team of tech support monkeys was a complete waste of time.
It appears that the issue with installing the MagicJack Plus on the Server stemmed from permission problems that we were unable to resolve. However, there is a work-around if you have another Mac that you are able to install the MagicJack Plus on.
When you are able to successfully install the MagicJack Plus on a Mac, it creates a hidden directory and set of files in the Users folder (to show your hidden files in OS X, CLICK HERE). For example, the hidden directory it created on our MacBook Air was Users/humanovation/.magicJack/Softphone and contained the files magicJack.app and splash.app.
When we tried to install MagicJack Plus on our Mac Mini Server, however, it created the hidden directory Users/humanovation/.magicJack but did not create the hidden subdirectory /Softphone or the magicJack.app and splash.app files. Every time that we tried to install it we would get an error that said “Cannot install magicJack. The installation is already in progress.” Rebooting several times and removing all other USB connections had no effect either.
To solve the problem, we simply copied the hidden subdirectory /Softphone and the magicJack.app and splash.app files from our MacBook Air to a thumb drive and transferred them to the hidden Users/humanovation/.magicJack directory on our Mac Mini Server. As soon as we plugged in the MagicJack Plus, the keypad screen popped up and we were making calls for free.
This is in no means a fix for everyone. However, we scoured the internet for a solution to our problem and none were available. Accordingly, we hope that this may help some of you have similar issues or at least point you in the right direction.
